Triangle Chapter Report – October 2014

The October meeting of the Triangle Chapter was well-attended and came off in fine style. Everyone was eagerly anticipating our next 2 races, and many members had just come back from the SARRC Invitational Challenge at Daytona where the SEDIV championships were decided last weekend. Justin Deffenbaugh crewed for Steve Rose at Daytona and provided us with in-car video. It was exciting!

The situation in IT-7 was a repeat of last year. Steve was tied in points with his closest competitor for the championship. Whoever won the race would win the IT-7 SARRC Championship. Last year it was Steve who emerged victorious. Could he do it again? The tension was high as we rode along with Steve. But unfortunately we were witness to the spin that cost him the title. Oh man, so close! But second place in a competition that close is nothing to sneeze at. Good job, Steve! Thanks, Justin! That video will be on YouTube as soon as it’s edited, he said.

We also took note of the Grassroots Motorsports Ultimate Track Car Challenge, 40 cars vying for fastest lap of VIR, since local favorite Jim Taggart was on the cover of the magazine, in his Porsche GT3. While not the overall winner, that honor went to a purpose-built Viper race car at 1:45.345, Jim took 4th for the fastest time for a production-based automobile. Other NCR drivers did well too. Victor Seaber, a past Driver of the Year for us, was second in his DSR, very fast for such a small motor. Anne Keller took 23rd in her familiar black Z06 Corvette, a really good result. And young Alex Phelps managed 32nd out of 40 in his MX-5. Good work! Nice driving by all of you!

Business meeting was very short. We reviewed the results of the joint event with the Tarheel Sports Car Club. It wasn’t very “joint”, since we had to pull out for lack of entries in our portion, a solo planned for the VIR skidpad. But the turnout was good for the HPDE, rallycross, and go-karts, so we’ll try again next year. We think we can get the autocross participation up by making it a points event, so we’ll give that a try if we can, said Mark Senior, our event liaison.

The Region is well in the black for the year heading into our busy fall racing season. Let’s hope that we can stay that way when the dust settles from the upcoming Goblins Go and the 13-hour Charge of the Headlight Brigade. Haven’t made plans yet? You’re late! Register now!

Finally, long-time member and current steward, Wayne Quick, and his wife Jean, invited everyone out to their place in Dunn, at 90 Sampson Road, for their annual pig-pickin’ “Pig Out” barbeque, Saturday, October 4th. Wayne, in the finest North Carolina tradition, basically says, “Y’all come now, ya hear?” to all his friends in the North Carolina Region. Stop by and enjoy some of the best eatin’ in these parts.

Or make plans to join us for some great Mexican food and camaraderie at the next Triangle Chapter meeting, Wednesday, November 4th. Do some bench racing and find out how everyone fared those back-to-back weekends in October. I’ll see you there…or at the races!
