Feb 24, 2008 Spring Fling at UNCW
The Cape Fear Chapter of the SCCA got its 2008 SOLO
Season off to a great start with the Spring Fling @ UNCW! 73 competitors
shook the off-season cobwebs away and took to a fast and flowing two lap
course at the UNCW Park and Ride Lot on South College Road. The course
proved challenging with a tricky double crossover section and plenty of
sand to go around. Thanks to Ken P., Chris D., and others who manned our
rented parking lot blower to help provide a clean race surface for all.
This helped Jacob Lokken in his 06 Subaru WRX STi take home the FTD
Trophy with a time of 36.437. Charlie Fullwood took home the PAX Trophy
with a raw time of 37.691 in his E Stock 91 MR2. Kelly Brookshire in her
05 STi took home the Ladies Class Trophy with a time of 39.778. Top
Novice Driver was Justin Streuli in his 06 STi. Also, we gave out our
first ever Cone Killer Award to Charles Erickson in his 07 Lotus Elise.
Congratulations to all who took home a trophy! Thanks
to all who arrived early and stayed late to help get our season started

Nov 25th, 2007 Riverview GP Autocross Season Finale
Cool weather and a light rain did not deter 46
dedicated car enthusiasts from having fun at the RiverView GP in
Downtown Wilmington. Slipping and sliding was the order of the day
through the initial three morning runs. However, after the lunch break,
the Cape Fear Community College pavement dried and B Group easily
started dropping 4-5 seconds off their earlier runs. The competition was
fierce on the sharp end of the grid where 4WD cars dominated until the
mid-engined E-Stock Toyota MR2 of Charlie Fullwood set a FTD @ 36.813.
Nice run Charlie!
The 2007 Cape Fear Cup Trophy & some cheap champagne was awarded to
Kestrel Racing who held off the strong Hurricane Motorsports & Team LSD
for the Team Championship win.
Its been a great year of Autocrossing, now lets look forward to 2008!

Oct 28th, 2007 Rumble@The River Autocross
Saturday morning the Cape Fear Chapter held a Free
Novice Introduction-to-Autocrossing Class where 11 drivers received
instruction from experienced SCCA Members. Though it rained in the
morning, all enjoyed plenty of seat time & by the end of the day it was
a dry course. Many students remarked that it was great learning to drive
in changing conditions. For Sunday's Rumble @ the River competition, it
was a breezy and cool day. The course was a slightly modified version of
last event held in June, quite fast and flowing. Along with 55
competitors, 3 Formula Ford open wheel race cars put on quite a show.
FTD went to the 70 Caldwell FF1600 C - Modified open wheel car of Stan

Sept 23rd, 2007 Indy at the Park Autocross
The 4th annual Indy @ the Park took place under sunny
skies and quite warm temperatures for late September. With temps
reaching the high 90's, the 47 competitors were glad to complete their 6
official runs by 2:15pm making it another well run event by the Cape
Fear Chapter. The course design was fast and flowing and required
numerous gear changes. As usual for this location, obtaining traction is
a challenge on the aging surface, but most importantly, we all had great
fun!

Aug 12th, 2007 Riverfront GP Autocross
As usual, the 2007 RiverFront GP produced a great
atmosphere with many spectators. Behind the scenes, the Cape Fear
Chapter worked with the City of Wilmington to close 2nd and Hanover
Streets for SCCA Grid and a Noise Permit was obtained. 61 entries
negotiated a sweeping course that included two runs up "Horsepower Hill"
and a tight pivot which had to be negotiated twice. Taking it wide or
hot resulted in seconds of lost time. A well-driven V-8 powered Mazda
RX-7 won Fast-time-of-the-Day.

July 29th, 2007 Sounds of Freedom Autocross
New River Air Station site is our best Solo location by far. A long
taxiway and large concrete pad allows plenty of speed and excitement.
Course designer Ken Porteous put together a very fast course that
afforded the best use of the facility. 42 competitors completed all of
their 6 official runs by 2:00pm, making it one the smoothest running
events ever organized by the Cape Fear Chapter. A sizeable donation was
provided to the Single Marine Program on base. We look forward to
returning in late October for the Rumble @ the River Auto-X where we
will offer a Novice Autocross School to all active military personnel.

What a fantastic event! Many thanks to all who attended 2007 Gatorcross
and helped with it's smooth running. Course designers Brad Draughon and
Maria Mayorga put together an interesting course for such a small
location. Plenty of overlap between cars meant the event ran quite
quickly. All competitors finished their 6 official runs by 2:30pm in the

May 20th, 2007 MayDay on the Runway Autocross
There is plenty of space to play at the runways of Global TransPark -
Kinston. Many thanks to Event Chairman Chris Bray for all of his hard
work and to those NCR Yellow Shirts and helpers who came out and cleaned
up the tarmac. Without their help, our 1st event at this site would have
not been such a success. 43 entries took part under sunny skies and a
cool breeze kept things comfortable throughout the event. Lap times were
60+ seconds and each competitor completed 7 runs. Looking forward to
returning to this site in November.

April 29th, 2007 Top Gun Challenge Autocross/Solo
The Top Gun Challenge-Rescheduled took place 2 weeks after
it's original calendar date due to a severe storm on April 15th. The
weather was near perfect as competitors took to the taxiway and
expansive concrete pad at Marine Corps. New River Air Station -
Jacksonville. Cape Fear Chapter Event Staff did a great job setting up
the race course early in the morning and the event went smoothly all
day. A familiar course design and 6 competition runs allowed drivers to
perfect their times. High speeds were attained on course and a unique
360 degree pivot tested the extreme cornering limits of the drivers and
cars.

A cool morning kept the B-Group competitors searching for grip on the
newly sealed surface. As the temperature rose some A-group cars were
actually running quicker than most of the modified entries. Located in
Historic Downtown Wilmington, this Autocross site attracts many spectators
and they were treated to some impressive driving. The overall atmosphere
was very relaxed but a few championships were on the line so not all
drivers were taking it easy. What a great way to cap off a successful

Nov 5 2006 Back To Twin Rivers Autocross
What started out as a brisk fall morning with temps in the low 50's
quickly warmed up to the 70's as the sun came up. The temperature wasn't
the only thing that was heating up though. With the Back to Twin Rivers
event being the next to last event of the year the competition for season
championship points was also getting hot. A few classes are still up for
grabs and will come down to the last event in Wilmington. A-stock class
saw the battle between first and second decided by 7 one thousandths of a

great time was had by all. Many thanks go out to all involved in putting

Oct 22 2006 Rumble@The River Autocross
What a great weekend! It started bright and early Saturday morning where
SCCA members performed a Safety Plan and further developed a fast but
challenging course. We had the free Novice class where15 drivers received
instruction from experienced SCCA Solo 2 Members. All participants enjoyed
plenty of seat time. Sunday (Race Day) was a mixed bag of partly cloudy
skies and a few light sprinkles in the early session. Most drivers did get
at least 3 official runs in the dry before lunch. As clouds rolled in, it
was clear we would be running in the wet. Surprisingly, the concrete had
more grip and many drivers were caught out in the concrete-to-tarmac
transitions and braking for Chicago box near the finish line.

The 3rd Annual Indy at the Park was

thanks to the hard work of the course designer who put together a fast but
flowing course that rec’d high marks from many competitors. We were
fortunate to have quite a few SC region SCCA members visit our events this
year and this event was no different. A nasty red Corvette from Irmo, SC

August 12 Riverfront GP The day started gloomy
with plenty of sprinkles, but as promised by the weatherman, the skies
cleared and we were treated to a nice sunset over the Cape Fear River. In
addition to the dampness, the racing surface was a bit slick due to recent
blacktop sealer applied just a few months ago. Traction was at a premium
and the advantage went to the 4 wheel drive cars such as Subaru WRX's,
Mitsubishi EVO's and VW R32's. As the night went on, negotiating the
tricky course became even harder as headlights and street lighting were
all that illuminated the site. Revving engines and our PA system
reverberated Downtown Wilmington until we finished at 9:50pm. We are
looking forward to doing another Night Finish next year....If you have
never autocrossed at night, make your plans to join us in August 2007!

rain cut the event by half. In the interest of safety, it was decided that
we cancel the night portion of the event. Thanks to all who helped load up

the storm. Despite the event being shortened, we have met the requirements
of an "official" event by running 3 runs in the early session. Trophies

The weather was hot and so was the competition at the
Twin Rivers mall's, "Mall Mayhem" autocross event. Approx. 50 drivers
battled it out on the nicest day that this May has had to offer yet. The
event was co- sponsored by Family Tire and Auto Service of New Bern who
had an information tent set up.They also gave away free t-shirts, free oil
changes to all class winners and a free lifetime wheel alignment to the
fastest time of the day which belonged to Jeff Eng. Craven Community
College also held a pig pickin' on the opposite side of the mall which
many of the participants enjoyed during our mid-point break. Tim Forrest
of Havelock had his 1 of 1, 2005 Ford Mustang Cobra, cetified by Ford's
Special Vehicle Team and featured in Muscle Mustang and Fast Ford

taking the Cobra on a demonstration pass. A good time was had by all and
